3. Teaches Detachment. Detachment is a state of surrender. When you choose to move through the steps of an Emotional Detox you are essen- tially choosing to relinquish old ways of managing, clinging and most of all resisting what you feel. It is amazing to me howmuch we can hold onto reac- tions that do not serve you, your family, or your future. Think of the Cleanse steps, as a net. It will catch you every time. It provides a structure that is gentle, mindful, and loving to you and the planet. You can never be harmed from allowing yourself to feel, yet you can do a whole lot of damage resisting it. If you are like me, you might have been born into a family of reactivity. In other words, you may have been influenced by individuals who were reacting to rather than processing their emotions. Maybe, you lived in an environment where people avoided, acted out, ignored ran away from what they felt. If so, I totally get it. My family had similar patterns. While on the outside, we all managed to work hard inside, we had a history of pushing away our emotions to “survive” the day-to-day. Unfortunately, this contributed to some fertile ground for unhealthy patterns to develop. Things like turning to drugs, alcohol, extramarital affairs, and conflict. As you can imagine when these kinds of patterns (are left untreated and uncleansed) can lead to traumatic consequences things like divorce, health issues, and loss. Here is the good news, an Emotional Detox can help. It is based on this, your emotions are not the problem, it is how you react to them. You see when emotions are permitted to be processed fully (rather than held back, covered up, or denied) they help clear and transform patterns (of reactivity) into new ways of thinking, responding, and connecting. Before you go thinking well, that is my family's issue, not mine, let me tell you I had a similar attitude. I thought just because I wasn’t abusing drugs and alcohol somehow, I had managed to escape. It wasn’t until my marriage was falling apart, I realized this was not the case. While my patterns might have looked a little cleaner, nicer, the reality is I was doing the same damn thing. Only instead of drugs and alcohol, I became an expert at “being fine” not needing any help from anyone, thinking and being people-pleasing. Do you get the point? Patterns of pushing away what you feel rather than processing come in all shapes and sizes. CLEANSE is the acronym for the seven steps of an Emotional Detox. The Cleanse has been fleshed out in three Emotional Detox books. The newest one, Emotional Detox Now: 135 Self-Guided Practices to Renew Your Mind, Heart & Spirit pretty much offers a Cleanse for every area of your life. When practiced and developed on a regular basis, here are three ways an Emotional Detox can help transform patterns: 1. Move Energy. Think of emotional processing as similar to what happens when you open your front door to your home, and you can feel the air (energy) moving through. Your emotions are made of energy whichmeans they can be shaped into something new. As a result, you will gain a new perspec- tive. Albert Einstein taught us this, he said, “Energy cannot be destroyed but it can be transformed”. This means you don’t get rid of your emotions you transform them into something new. Since most of our patterns of reactivity are based on emotions it makes sense that changing them begins with tuning into (and processing) what you feel, even if the emotion took root years prior. 2. Increases Consciousness. What shifts a pattern of reactivity is aware- ness. What an Emotional Detox does is it allows you to focus on how you may be obstructing the emotions. Rather than seeing your emotions as the “cause” of what you feel or your situation instead, they are viewed as the solution. This increases the chances that you will take ownership of what you feel rather than waste your precious time revisiting the past or overfocusing (in some cases ruminating) on the future. To transform patterns your partic- ipation and willingness to feel (rather than think) is essential.
