CHANGE YOUR LIGHT, CHANGE YOUR LIFE: THE HIDDEN REASON WE’RE ALL SO TIRED

As women, and particularly moms, we’re used to feeling tired. I have three children, and to be honest, I thought this was just how I was SUPPOSED to feel. Every woman I knew felt this way. But as my children got older, and our family’s sleep schedules stabilized… it didn’t get better. In fact, I felt even more tired than ever. Why did I STILL feel so tired? I was stuck in this space where I wasn’t sick enough that doctors could find anything “wrong,” but not well enough to be fully enjoying life. Does that sound familiar? It should. There’s an epidemic of fatigue in women in their 30s and 40s that our health practitioners cannot explain. And to top it off, we do EVERYTHING we can to be healthy. We eat well, exercise, take care of our mental health… yet the fatigue and brain fog persists.

“Oh, it’s normal,” we’re told. “It’s just stress, it will pass.” And the worst one: “maybe it’s all in your head.”

I didn’t like those answers, so I set out to find new ones. I knew I needed to go beyond food, beyond fitness, beyond supplements, beyond mindset, and even beyond self-care. Those things are all important, but I was taking care of all those things, and I wasn’t getting better. There had to be something we were missing. I had no idea that the missing piece would be so profound, so life-changing and so EASY to do. It’s an incredible and groundbreaking new story about health that has emerged over the past 10 years, and even though the science has won multiple Nobel Prizes, most health practitioners don’t know anything about it. We have been ignoring an absolutely crucial aspect of our environment and this ignorance is making us sick, tired, grumpy, and puffy.

This crucial aspect is… LIGHT.

Yes, light. From our screens to our light bulbs to our sun exposure… it turns out that our entire body – our hormones, our neurotransmitters, our eyes, our heart, our brain – is programmed by the LIGHT ENVIRONMENT that we live, work, and sleep under. What? How can this be? It’s the science of circadian rhythms, and scientists are now discovering that disrupted circadian rhythms – being around the wrong light at the wrong time - can ruin pretty much every aspect of our health. Throughout the day, starting at sunrise, the sun emits different light frequencies, and these frequencies program our cells to carry out their functions: to be awake or to fall asleep, to store fat or to burn fat, to be calm, or to be alert. We evolved to be outside, downloading cellular instruc- tions from the sun. When we mess around with these natural light frequencies – via indoor lighting, looking at screens, or not spending enough time outside – we are interrupting our body’s natural processes and, in the long run, destroying our health.
